Prenatal Massage Is It Safe

Absolutely.  Women can begin massage therapy at any point in their pregnancy – from the planning stage all the way through labor/delivery and in the postpartum phase!

The real question is how the massage is to be performed.

That’s why it’s important to see a specialist, someone with education and experience, as well as the right kind of equipment to make the massage specially-catered to your goals, limits, and expectations. 

About Our Services

We provide customized therapeutic massage services to women, men, children and infants, and we specialize in perinatal (prenatal and postpartum) massage therapy for moms – also with the option of in-home sessions. We also teach workshops and offer customized in-person tutorials on partner massage, wellbeing and self-care.

When you first arrive, you’ll be greeted by your therapist and shown back to the treatment room.  At your first appointment your therapist will ask you questions about your medical history, your pregnancy, any specific goals, or expectations you have.

Pediatric Massage Therapy

The first consultation (also called the intake) is something we never gloss over.  We want to find out all about what you hope to get out of our time together, so that we can design the perfect session for you.  Depending on a variety of factors, we may suggest a specific body position, or product, or therapeutic approach.  All sessions are completely customized around your needs!

At Mama Bear Massage we also put a 30-minute buffer between all appointments, allowing plenty of time.  We never want you to feel rushed. After all, this time is crucial for your self-care!

Or your first time using the BodyCushion system, your therapist will also walk you through exactly what you need to do- where to put your belly, for example- so you can confidently settle in and relax.

During the session, your therapist will utilize the approach you agreed on during the intake, checking in along the way. Privacy draping is always utilized, and we will walk you through any extra steps (like for abdominal massage) when we get to that part.

You always have the right to change your mind, at any point throughout the session, about anything you want or don’t want included. And, we’ll check in with you about the pressure we’re using, to make sure it’s just right.

After the session has concluded, we’ll gently instruct you on next steps. We’ll quietly step out of the room, to allow you time to sit up, get off the table, and get dressed. We realize this process can take a bit longer when you’re pregnant!

So please, take your time and do not rush. Whenever you are ready, we’ll be just outside with some water for you. We are also happy to share any professional observations and recommendations with you at this time.

 

As long as your pregnancy is normal and healthy, you can receive a prenatal massage as often as you’d like! The general recommendation is 1-2 times per month during the first and second trimesters, and to greatly increase the frequency after 36 weeks up until delivery. Postpartum massage can take place as soon as you’re ready; for C-section deliveries we need to wait until the incisions have healed (typically 6 weeks.) 

We have bundles and membership options we’d be happy to tell you more about- it’s a great way to ensure accountability to your own wellness (mama- we know you put everyone’s needs before your own but here’s your sign to commit to more self-care!) Our bundles and memberships can be applied towards services for Papa Bears and Cubs, too, so the whole family can share!
